Shimla

History

Shimla is known as “queen of hills” because of the beauty present in all its surrounding hills. Shimla is located in northern India and a capital of Himachal Pradesh. It was formerly known by the name Simla. Early in the 18th century majority area of Shimla was occupied by dense forest. There were few houses that were scattered and Jakhoo Temple in the name of civilization in Shimla.

  • Christ Church is the second oldest church in Northern India. The stained glass windows present inside the church represents the humanity, hope and faith which give the church a majestic appearance.
  • Jakhu hill has the highest peak of 8,000 ft, situated 2 kilometers from Shimla. It gives us a beautiful view of the whole town along with magnificently snow covered Himalayas.
  • Shimla State Museum is to protect the culture, which was opened in early 1974. In this museum there is a large collection of sculptures, costumes, bronze wooden carvings, pahari paintings, jewelry and textile of the state.
  • Indian institute of advanced study was set up by Ministry of Education India in 1964. The building originally developed for Lord Dufferin and Viceroy of India from 1884–1888, named as Viceregal Lodge.

The nearby place of Shimla includes Kufri hill station which is famous for Skiing. Solan is famous for its temples, whereas Kullu hill station is a must visit to experience Skiing and natural beauty. Kasauli, Chandigarh and Dehradun are some more nearby places of Shimla famous for its lakes, gardens, museums etc.

The popular food joints in Shimla where you can get Tibetan, Chinese, Choley Bhature and many more dishes that you want to eat are Megha Tibetans Food Dhaba, Sita Ram in Lakkar bazaar, Tripti bakery and Mehru Halwai in Lower Bazaar are the food lovers point.

Roads and railways are well connected to Shimla. The nearest big city, Chandigarh is connected to Shimla by the National Highway 22. Bus and private vehicles are the local transport in Shimla but the private vehicles are prohibited in the mall area and nearby market. A good option for out of town trips is the tourist taxis.
